Natural Learning Academy offers four science subjects namely: Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences. These subjects aim to teach students how to visualise and approach different problems that they may encounter throughout their lives. There are therefore far more to these subjects than just the content, it teaches students problem solving skills that will ultimately prepare them for life.
As teachers of Maths and Science at Natural Learning Academy we aim to produce individuals who think critically and creatively. We also aim to make the learning experience more enjoyable by using different teaching styles combined with the use of technology. We make these, sometimes feared subjects, more relatable and enjoyable through real life examples and experiments.
Our approach to teaching Science at Natural Learning Academy is therefore to give learners the opportunity to explore different solutions to a problem. It is about more than just numbers or facts, it is about a way of thinking.
We use a more interactive approach and expect our students to be curious and to ask questions. Rather than only giving the answer to a problem, we encourage students to think about the solution. We also tailor lessons according to the class, meaning that we seek to engage learners on different levels as well as identify learners’ abilities in order to utilise them as fully as possible. Science subjects also teach perseverance by giving students the opportunity to test various approaches to solving problems. Science teaches students that mistakes are part of learning, and without ever making a mistake you cannot learn. Like Thomas A. Edison famously said, “I have not failed. I’ve only found 10 000 ways that won’t work”. Lastly, but very importantly our science subjects teach students that preparation and hard work are key to success.
