We are experiencing a “flood” of students at the moment. If this trend continues It will present us with new challenges in the New Year. From the school’s perspective we always have to keep in mind that we are both a business and a school. In both we need to excel. Although the economy is “tight” at the moment and becoming financially tighter, there are however new opportunities, both in terms of education and business opportunities opening up.
In terms of education we need to do a lot of experimentation with new technology in the New Year. The school is therefore placing an order for ten Acer Chrome books (notepad computers) for delivery at the end of this year. The advantage of these computers is that they run on the Google Chrome operating system, hence quick booting and access to all the Google Chrome apps thereby enhancing the digital experience. We will experiment with these computers next year to see how they make a significant impact on the effectivity of the education process. Marianne Bezuidenhout will be in charge of this project.
At the end of the day it makes no sense to lay out money on things that do not make a significant difference to the education process. Hume De Bruyn will therefore spend a lot of his time next year training the students and teachers on the effective use of our technology. We have recently significantly upgraded our whole internet / Wifi facility. We now have two seperate systems running, one for students and one for staff.
After ten years of active teaching I will be “retiring” at the end of this year. I will however be at the school from 8:00 to 13:00 daily, doing “special” projects such as seeing how we can improve the maths and language abilities of especially the grades 7 to 9’s.
I mentioned at the start that there are still opportunities opening up. NLA has been approached to start an educational service for students on farms. Maybe we can report on this, if there are any concrete developments, by the next blog.
Finally, a word on having a dream. Could you imagine we can buy a large warehouse, line the sides inside with classrooms, work rooms, library, school gym etc., make the centre a village “green” with flowers, trees, benches, play areas, a swimming pool, skate board area, even a “shop” selling fruit, cool drinks and healthy foods. At the closed end of the Warehouse a stage for productions? Ah well, one can dream!
