BACKGROUND
INSTRUCTIONS
Week 1 (25 JULY)Shapes
PurposeTo enable students to recognize common geomentric shapes in different contexts.
INSTRUCTIONDraw 7 basic geometric shapes in your book
The circle, triangle, square, cylinder, oval, rectangle and octagonal
Cut out pictures of objects found in the magazine that match these shapes
eg: pizza for circle.
Paste the pictures in next to each of the corresponding geometric shapes.
Week 2 &3 (1 - 8 AUGUST)Shape drawing
PurposeTo help students use common shapes to construct complex objects.
INSTRUCTIONThe fascilitator will provide an example (photograph, drawing or model) of a complex object
(eg: train, cathedral, grandfather clock)
The fascilitator will point out individual geometric shapes that make up the details of the object.
(eg: circles for wheels, windows, rectangles for bricks etc)
This example will then be rendered as a line drawing, using only basic shapes.
The student will then choose their own example containing a variety of basic shapes
A line drawing composed entirely of geometric figures should be done.
Week 4 &5(15 -22 AUGUST)Substitutional Imagery - Collage
PurposeAn opportunity for students to practice identifying and selecting basic shapes
in print media, and reassemble them into a collage rendering.
INSTRUCTIONUsing their previous Shape Drawings as a guide, students should cut out pictures
from magazines, catalogs etc and , substituting for the original geomentric shapes,
paste these together into an approximation of their original subjects.
(Many of these cutout pieces will not be exactly the right size or configuration to fit
the subject - this does not matter.
The goal here is to reinforce the process of shape recognition and to make
